Sophoclean Apologia: Philoctetes

Authors

 • William M. Calder III

Abstract

The deceiver in the play (409 B.C.) is not Odysseus but Neoptolemus, and Sophocles’ portrayal of the decent Philoctetes’ helplessness can be seen in the context of the poet’s criticism of the regime of the 400 (Arist. Rh. 1419).
