Abstract

The so-called astronomical fragments of the Babylonian historian Berossus, author of the early-Hellenistic Babyloniaca, have often been deemed spurious on the grounds of their difficult placing in a Babylonian context and their similarity to Greek cosmological doctrines. This article reviews the fragments anew, proposing an intermediate position between wholesale acceptance and rejection.
