Abstract

The article examines the two parts into which Isaeus III (On the Estate of Pyrrhus) is divided. In the first one the speaker intends to demonstrate that Pyrrhus did not marry Nicodemus’ sister and is not Phile’s father. In the second part the speaker intends to demonstrate that Endius did not give Phile in marriage to Xenocles. The conclusion is that Isaeus III does not demonstrate that an illegitimate daughter (nothē) could be regularly given in marriage to an Athenian citizen, as the dominant doctrine instead believes.
