Theodora, a (not so) Holy Harlot: Procopius’ <I>Secret History</I> and the Hagiographic Narrative
Abstract
Procopius’ portrait of Theodora is constructed as a deliberate inversion of that of the “holy harlot” saints who repent of their past lives, effectively denying her the redemption that they earn.
