The Mask of Compilation: Authorial Interventions in Anonymous Cyzicenus

Abstract

The anonymous author from Cyzicus who penned an Ecclesiastical History in the late fifth century A.D. has often been dismissed as a mere compiler, an indentity he himself promotes at the start of the work. Comparison to Cyzicenus’s source texts, however, uncovers patterns of variations best explained as the editing hand of the author himself. Acknowledging the author’s agenda should prompt careful review of the unique texts contained within the compilation, including a speech attributed to Constantine I, a set of regulations for the early Christian church, and a mock set of acta for the Council of Nicaea.
