Abstract

In Hesiod’s αἰδὼς δ’ οὐκ ἀγαθή (Erga 317), αἰδώς is not a divided concept referring here to the poor man’s shame, but is litotes for its opposite, ἀναιδείη, which offers to the indolent an easy but short-lived prosperity.
