A Pragmatic and Sociolinguistic Account of δαιμόνιε in Early Greek Epic

Abstract

Consideration of the social standing and emotional relation of speaker to addressee in epic shows that the address daimonie implies negative disposition and surprise, not the friendship term that would emerge later.
